The strategy of Liberal Party campaign manager to package the opposition senatorial candidates as a team, called Otso Diretso, has failed big time.

A political strategist interviewed by the Philippine Daily Inquirer said LP— and Pangilinan’s decision to sell the Otso Diretso brand is to blame for the poor showing of most of the senatorial candidates who comprise it.

“They had two brands to build—Otso Diretso and the individual candidates. And they chose the former. Now Otso Diretso is more popular than the individual candidates,” said the political strategist.

Otso chose the collective brand. But in a Senate race, name recall is the name of the game. And they invested in a name that won’t even be on the ballot,” he added.

Pre-election surveys consistently showed only former senator Mar Roxas and re-electionist senator Bam Aquino were either within or near the “Magic 12,” the list of candidates who have a statistical chance of winning the senatorial race.

Other members of the Otso Diretso are far from becoming serious contenders, according to survey results. They are: former law dean Chel Diokno, peace advocate Samira Gutoc, election lawyer Romulo Macalintal, former Quezon Rep. Erin Tañada, Magdalo Rep. Gary Alejano and former Solicitor General Florin Hilbay.
