Matagal nang kalakaran! Morales: 1 year ain’t enough to rid Philhealth of corruption
Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (Philhealth) president and Chief Executive Officer Ricardo Morales admitted Tuesday (August 11) that his one-year stint is not enough to rid the agency of corruption.
At the continuation of the Senate Committee of the Whole’s hearing on the anomalies within Philhealth, Morales said fraud is a “systemic” problem that has been hounding the agency.
“Fraud has always been with the system as it has always been in all similar health systems in the world. The problem is systemic and cannot be solved in one year and maybe not even three years,” he said.
“I miscalculated the time required to get the IT system up and running. One year was not enough and the budget was inadequate for the job,” Morales added.
The Philhealth chief, who recently filed for a leave of absence due to cancer, said the agency’s internal mechanisms to address fraud are also insufficient.
Morales revealed during an earlier hearing that Philhealth lost around P10.2 billion due to corruption in 2019. He, however, denied allegations he is coddling the supposed “mafia” that exists within the agency.
