The idea to impose a tax on the likes of Netflix, Google and Facebook has been under study for quite some time by the Bureau of Internal Revenue, Sen. Panfilo Lacson said Saturday.
Lacson said he was informed by a ranking BIR official that the idea had been considered even before Rep. Joey Salceda brought it up recently.
But he said the BIR is taking into account several factors, including whether the Philippines has enough subscribers for the idea to work.
“Siyempre may effort na BIR riyan maski bago sinabi ni Rep Salceda yan nabanggit sa akin ng mataas na opisyal ng BIR na talagang pinag-aaralan nila kaya lang napakaraming challenges,” he said in an interview on DWIZ radio.
He said the Philippines has fewer subscribers compared to more populous neighbors like India and China.
China has a population of 1.5 billion while India has one billion. The Philippines has a little over 100 million.
“Sa Pilipinas di ganoon karami so wala tayong boses. Pero kung China and India pinayagan nila i-tax. Sa atin maliit boses natin kasi maliit ang subscription,” he said
