There’s more than meets the eye to broadcast journalist Martin Andanar’s designating in the Rodrigo Duterte administration as Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) secretary.
Duterte’s mainstream media pick in Andanar is actually a callback to the Arroyo administration, if one looks to who the latter’s old man is.
Andanar, who currently works at TV5 network, is the son of former Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Undersecretary for Administration Wencelito Andanar. The latter was even named by former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as acting DILG secretary in February 2006 during a Cabinet shake up.
A few years later, the elder Andanar became deputy secretary of the PDP-Laban-UNA political alliance.
Andanar also has ties to Senator Cynthia Villar, a key Duterte ally. Andanar is married to the daughter of Las Pinas Mayor Nene Aguilar, Villar’s brother.
It can be recalled that Duterte allied himself with PDP-Laban in last month’s polls wherein he won via landslide.
Several ex-Arroyo-era officials have already found Cabinet jobs with the Duterte administration. These are incoming Presidential Adviser on the Press Process Jesus Dureza; National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr. and Labor Secretary Bebot Bello to name a few.
Duterte also pursued former Arroyo defense secretary Gibo Teodoro, but the latter declined his offers for personal reasons.
Broadcaster Andanar will replace PCOO Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. on June 30, when “Digong” formally assumes his post.
