May krisis na, masaya pa! Pia Cayetano ‘welcomes’ COVID-19 pandemic
Senator Pia Cayetano showed Monday (May 26) how out of touch she was with reality by saying she “welcomes” the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a Senate hearing, Cayetano said the pandemic revealed several gaps in the healthcare system. She said she has been aware of the absence of adequate government investment in healthcare since she became chair of the Senate health committee in 2004.
“We live in a time when we did not even provide for sufficient funding for vaccination, which is the most basic way of protecting our infants from infectious diseases,” Cayetano said.
The senator said the lack of funding for vaccination may be “shocking,” but it also prompts reflection on whether the government could’ve invested more money into it.
“And therefore, I welcome– I do say it– welcome this unfortunate event known as COVID because it does open our eyes and gives us that window of opportunity to provide the necessary funding, to provide the necessary attention and effort that our healthcare deserves,” she said.
