May nanalo na! Alan Cayetano admits Romualdez will become Speaker if lawmakers vote now
Taguig-Pateros Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano has admitted that Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez has the speakership in the bag if voting in the House of Representatives will take place this week.
In an interview over ANC’s Headstart Monday (July 1), Cayetano said Romualdez has the biggest number of supporters in the House so far out of all the contenders for Speaker.
“If you ask me right now sino ang pinakamarami baka si Martin pa,” he said.
Cayetano made the remark as he disputed broadcaster Karen Davila’s comment that Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Jay Velasco appears to be the frontrunner in the speakership race because of the endorsement he received from PDP-Laban and other major political parties.
“They (PDP-Laban) already denied they are supporting him. Even [Senator] Koko Pimentel said that [endorsement] was subject to what the President said. And the President said una ako so hindi sila sumusunod sa Presidente. The NPC (Nationalist People’s Coalition) also denied and the party-list already denied [endorsing Velasco],” he said.
Anakalusugan party-list Rep. Mike Defensor said Thursday (July 4) that Romualdez has the support of over 160 lawmakers in the 304-member chamber.
Capiz Rep. Fredenil Castro also said Romualdez will handily win the speakership race if President Rodrigo Duterte doesn’t meddle and endorse any of the candidates.
“What I could say is he has decent number determinative to catapult him to the speakership,” he said.
