Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said on Wednesday (June 27) that he has asked the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to investigate persons involved with Germany-based payment service provider Wirecard which is currently facing a scandal over missing 1.9 billion euros.
“Upon consultation with the BSP (Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas) governor, I have directed the NBI to investigate certain individuals who are reportedly involved in the WIRECARD case in Germany, allegedly resulting in the loss of 1.9 billion euros (USD 2.1 billion),” he said.
“The NBI will coordinate with the AMLC (Anti-Money Laundering Council) in the initial phase of the investigation,” he disclosed.
Guevarra has also directed the Bureau of Immigration (BI) to locate Wirecard chief operating officer (COO) Jan Marsalek.
“Our BI records show that he arrived in the Philippines on March 3, 2020 and departed on March 5, 2020,” he said.
“However, there are some indications that he may have returned recently and may still be here,” he pointed out.
