Medialdea is tipped to be Duterte’s next SC appointee

Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea’s days in the executive branch are numbered.

No, Medialdea isn’t the next official to be fired by President Rodrigo Duterte over allegations of corruption.

Rather, the 65-year-old lawyer will likely be the next Associate Justice appointed by Duterte to the Supreme Court, Politiko has learned.

The President will have to appoint a new Justice to the Supreme Court in two months’ time as Justice Bienvenido Reyes will retire on July 6.

Medialdea’s father was former Supreme Court Associate Justice Leo Medialdea, who served from 1988 to 1992 under President Corazon Aquino.

He is close to Duterte since they were childhood friends in Davao City.

There had been talks that Medialdea was eyed to become the next Ombudsman, when Conchita Carpio Morales retires in 2018.

But it seems Medialdea and Duterte both cannot wait for 2018– and see becoming an SC Justice as the more prestigious post.
