Mga ganid! Zarate assails Maynilad, Manila Water’s plan to pass on P1.843-B fine to consumers
By JOHN CARLO M. CAHINHINAN
House Deputy Minority leader Carlos Isagani Zarate blasted water concessionaires Maynilad and Manila Water for trying to pass on to consumers the P1.843 billion fine imposed to them by the Supreme Court for violation of the Philippine Clean Water Act.
Zarate got irked after the Manila Water management announced a 780 percent water rate increase for customers because of the Supreme Court-imposed fine.
“This is the height of corporate impunity, insolence and greed,” said Zarate.
The Supreme Court recently found the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS), and water concessionaires Maynilad and Manila Water guilty for failing to provide sewerage facilities in Metro Manila and other highly urbanized cities five years into the effectivity of their respective legislative franchises.
MWSS has recently approved the petition of Manila Water and Maynilad to increase their rates in October—P0.17 per cubic meter on the basic charge of P28.52 per cubic meter for Manila Water while P0.02 per cubic meter on Maynilad’s P36.24 basic charge.
“They were the ones who violated the law yet they have the temerity to pass the fine to long suffering consumers. Sumosobra na talaga sila!” Zarate added.
