Magdalo party-list Rep. Francisco Ashley Acedillo wants a full decommissioning of all the firearms in the Moro Islamic Liberation Front’s (MILF) possession before a plebiscite is held on the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL).
At a press briefing on Thursday, Acedillo pointed out that the decommissioning annex of the comprehensive peacr agreement signed by the national government and MILF only calls for the group to initially turn over 35 percent of its weapons.
With the first phase of the decommissioning process only set to begin this year, Acedillo said the MILF will still have 65 percent of its arms intact should the plebiscite on the BBL proceed next year if the bill hurdle Congress.
“The MILF’s supposed to transition into a political entity when the BBL is passed yet we’ll allow them to have 65 percent of their weapons during this political exercise (plebiscite). We can’t let that happen,” he said.
Asked if a full decommissioning of the MILF’s firearms is possible  by next year, Alejano said it will be difficult but still doable.
“Kung pupwersahin, kaya ng gobyernong gawin. May mga ibang bagay talaga dito sa bansa nating kailangan pang pwersahin [para mangyari] eh,” he said.
