Misplaced priorities: Netizen hits Año’s call for Taal eruption donations after P11-B cut in calamity fund

A netizen has pointed out the irony of Interior Secretary Eduardo Año’s request for donations for victims of Taal volcano’s eruption since the administration slashed the calamity fund by billions of pesos.

Netizen@Maree_Therese tweeted Monday (January 13): “In 2016, the Duterte administration slashed the Calamity Fund by P23 billion from the Aquino administration with hardly an explanation, and by further P11 billion in 2019. The budget gainers for these years have been controversial, to say the least. I think you know who.”

Año had asked the public to donate relief goods and other survival items to the evacuees in Batangas following Taal volcano’s eruption Sunday (January 12).

The calamity fund was reduced by P23 billion to P15.7 billion under the P3.35-trillion national budget for 2017, the first spending plan approved by Duterte.

In 2016, under the Aquino administration, the calamity fund was P38.9 billion.

Meanwhile, only P20 billion was allotted for calamity response under the 2019 national budget.
