Nabangga na nga, pinag-sorry pa! Captain of sunken PH boat apologizes to Duterte over ‘meeting’
The captain of the Philippine boat which sank in the West Philippine Sea after being hit by a Chinese vessel has apologized to President Rodrigo Duterte for misunderstanding their supposed “meeting.”
F/B GEM-VER Capt Junel Insigne told the media in Occidental Mindoro Wednesday (June 19) that he didn’t know he was scheduled to meet with Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol in Manila and not Duterte.
Insigne backed out of traveling to Manila Monday (June 17), a day after Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi said he didn’t think the Chinese vessel hit the F/B GEM-VER on purpose.
“Humihingi ako ng paumanhin sa ating mahal na presidente, na hindi po pala ako pinatawag niya kundi si Secretary Piñol po ang nagpatawag sa amin. Hindi po ako natuloy, umatras ako dahil masama ang pakiramdam ko,” Insigne said in a press conference.
Piñol, who was beside Insigne, said he told the boat captain to clarify that he wasn’t supposed to meet Duterte because he was putting the President “in a bad light.”
“[Insigne] admitted na medyo may mga statement siya na ayon sa kanya hindi niya alam na nasabi niya,” he said.
Malacañang earlier denied that Duterte was supposed to meet with the fishermen from F/B GEM-VER.
Duterte has downplayed the sinking of the boat as a “small maritime incident.”
