The number of freed convicts who have surrendered continue to come in, said Justice Undersecretary Markk Perete on Monday (Sept. 23).

“As of 9:00am today, 23 September 2019, a total of 2,221 individuals have surrendered; 1,985 of whom are already at the BuCor (Bureau of Corretions) while 236 are still in the custody of the PNP (Philippine National Police),” the spokesman said.

The number is already way over the 1,914 persons expected to surrender by the September 19 deadline set by President Rodrigo Duterte.

The number which was provided by the BuCor supposedly show the number of convicts freed since 2013 due to good conduct time allowance (GCTA).

However, Duterte ordered the 1,914 freed convicts to surrender because many of them may be unqualified to benefit from GCTA.
