Nagpasaklolo pa sa assistant! Clueless PEZA chief eased out of ABS-CBN franchise hearing
SAGIP party-list Rep. Rodante Marcoleta had to ask for another official from the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) to answer his questions because Director General Charito Plaza appeared to be clueless about laws pertinent to companies applying for tax perks.
At the 10th congressional hearing on ABS-CBN’s franchise, Marcoleta asked Plaza if she was aware of the cross border doctrine for our economic zones.
Plaza responded in the affirmative. But when Marcoleta pressed her to elaborate on the doctrine, Plaza was overheard on Zoom asking someone near her, “Ano bang ibig sabihin niyan?”
Exasperated by Plaza’s ignorance, Marcoleta asked House legislative franchises committee chairman and Palawan Rep. Franz Alvarez if there was another official from PEZA who could face him. Deputy Director General for Operations Mary Abordo faced him.
PEZA was invited to the hearing on ABS-CBN’s franchise to answer questions regarding Big Dipper Digital Content and Design, a fully owned subsidiary of the network.
Big Dipper has been able to enjoy tax perks because it was registered as an information technology service company under PEZA. Its sole client, however, is ABS-CBN. The network’s executives say the company repurposes content so it can be licensed overseas and across various platforms.
