Nakahanap ng kakampi! 24 Ateneo profs back teacher accused of sexual harassment
Twenty-four professors of Ateneo De Manila University have publicly expressed support for a teacher accused of sexual harassment as the school comes under fire for its lukewarm response to cases of alleged abuse.
In a statement dated October 19, the teachers said they stand by the innocence of Dr. Mary Thomas, an assistant professor of ADMU’s English Department.
“Dr. Thomas holds the highest standards of decorum, good moral character, honesty and professionalism. We deplore all accusations hurled against her, made worse by naming her in social media and other public fora,” they said.
The professors said the revelation of Thomas’ identity in social media posts and articles “not only damaged her reputation as an upright person,, but also caused the possible end of her career.”
Thomas’ colleagues said members of the ADMU community should refrain from engaging in trial by publicity and mob lynching.
A student accused Thomas in social media posts of harassing him on campus. The student said he lodged a complaint against the professor before school administrators, but she only ended up getting a 15-day suspension.
The student’s allegation led to a protest demanding ADMU to take a stronger stance on cases of sexual harassment.
Fr. Jose Ramon Villarin, SJ, the school president, said he has ordered an independent review of the school’s protocols in handling such cases.
