Malacañang believes the government should invest more money on sports.

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said this after boxer-turned-politician Senator Manny Pacquiao pushed for the modernization of sports facilities in cities and towns nationwide.

“Dapat talaga pondohan ang sports. Ang dami kong naririnig na ang iba daw tinatahi na lang ang kanialng uniporme. Nakakaawa naman. I cannot even understand why we are not funding them. We should,” Panelo told reporters Tuesday.

Over the weekend, Filipino athletes Carlos Yulo and Nesthy Petecio brought honor to the country with their respective gold-medal victories at the 49th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Germany and the 2019 AIBA Women’s Boxing World Championships in Russia, respectively.

Both Yulo and Petecio will receive cash incentives worth P1 million provided under Republic Act 10699.
