President Rodrigo Duterte has expressed his admiration for outgoing House Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, whose leadership he described as “intuitive” and “hands-on.”

“President Arroyo’s extensive experience as a renowned economist and academic was crucial in laying down the foundations of our country’s steady economic growth during her term, the effects of which are still felt today and will still be felt in the years ahead,” said Duterte in a speech during the farewell dinner for former President Arroyo held at The Manila Hotel Tuesday evening.

In her 27-year career in public service, Duterte, who served as presidential consultant on public order during the Arroyo administration, said the congresswoman “became a major figure and was instrumental in crafting policies that made our bullish economy possible.”

He went on to say: “Serving in various capacities, she crossed party lines and worked with various sectors in order to implement legislation that improved our people’s welfare, brought decentralized development to the poor and marginalized constituencies, and instituted significant fiscal reforms that have sustained our nation for almost three decades.”

The Chief Executive also said he intends to make the Philippines even stronger “by following her brilliant example of a strong-willed leadership and decisive governance.”
