Nakatunog? Imelda skips conviction verdict in Sandiganbayan
By JOHN CARLO M. CAHINHINAN
It looks like former First Lady and incumbent Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Romualdez Marcos already knew of the fate she will be facing and decided to skip her judgment day at the Sandiganbayan.
Marcos was a no-show during Friday’s promulgation at the anti-graft court’s fifth division, wherein, the Ilocos Norte solon was convicted for using her previous cabinet position to maintain multiple Swiss bank accounts.
Not a shadow of Marcos or her lawyer was present when the verdict was finally read in the court room.
The fifth division gave the camp of Marcos 30 days to explain their non-appearance during the promulgation.
The 89-year old former First Lady was sentenced to prison between six years and one month to 11 years for each of the seven counts of graft. The court has issued a perpetual disqualification from public office against Marcos which may affect her upcoming election bid next year.
The former First Lady will run as Ilocos Norte governor in the upcoming 2019 midterm polls.
