Napuyat kagabi! Sleepy Duterte skips handing out diplomas to PMA graduates
President Rodrigo Duterte has broken tradition by skipping the distribution of diplomas to the members of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Mabalasik Class of 2019.
During the PMA graduation rites Sunday (May 26), Duterte handed out the diplomas of only two out of the 261 graduating cadets.
He stood up to give Cadet First Class Dionne Mea Umalla, the class valedictorian, her diploma, the presidential saber, and the certificate of ownership to a house and lot.
After congratulating Umalla, Duterte returned to his seat and let Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana take over the distribution of diplomas.
The President only stood up again when it was time to award the diploma of Cadet First Class Danmark Solomon, who finished last in his batch.
Solomon also received a caliber .45 pistol from Duterte.
Lorenzana told CNN Philippines that Duterte sat out the distribution of diplomas because he was sleepy.
“Inaantok daw siya,” he said in a text message.
Duterte arrived two hours late for the graduation ceremony at Fort Del Pilar in Baguio City.
Past Presidents of the country, as the Commander-in-Chief of the military, have been known to distribute the diplomas of the graduating PMA cadets.
