University of the Philippines journalism professor Luis Teodoro believes the fishermen whose boat was sunk by a Chinese vessel changed their narrative because of Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol.

In a tweet posted Wednesday (June 19), Teodoro accused Piñol of “putting words” into the mouths of the fishermen from F/B GEM-VER.

“The media should point out that Agriculture Secretary Pinol was sent not only to intimidate the fishermen into changing their narrative about the sinking of the F/B Gem-Ver fishing boat; he was also practically putting words into their mouths,” he said.

The boat’s captain, Junel Insigne, told reporters after meeting with Piñol that he was unsure whether their boat sas deliberately rammed by the Chinese vessel while it was anchored on Recto Bank on June 9.

Insigne also apologized for saying he had a meeting scheduled with President Rodrigo Duterte when it was set with Piñol.

The boat captain backed out of traveling to Manila for the meeting, though he did not say why.
