National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Deputy Director Ferdinand Lavin on Saturday (March 28) revealed that the agency is investigating 12 persons for allegedly producing fake news found in social media involving the 2019 coronavirus (COVID-19).
With this, the NBI spokesman warned the public not to produce fake news.
“Ito ay nagko-cause ng panic, ito ay nagko-cause ng hindi magandang imahe sa laban ng gobyerno tungkol sa COVID-19,” he said.
Lavin said the NBI’s Cyber Crime Division (NBI-CCD) has been investigating fake news posted on social media this March and found the 12 persons as some of the sources.
He added other fake news sources which used pseudo accounts are also being investigated.
“We are trying to identify who the owners of these fake accounts are,” he assured.
By next week, Lavin said the NBI will be able to determine who among the 12 will face charges.
He noted that many among the 12 have already replied to the subpoenas and submitted replies to the allegations against them.
