The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has been ordered to conduct an investigation into the murder of Las Banos, Laguna Mayor Caesar Perez.
Justice Undersecretary Adrian Sugay gave the directive in a memorandum dated Dec. 4.
Sugay instructed the NBI “to conduct an investigation and case build-up relative to the death of Mayor Caesar Perez of Los Banos, Laguna and, if evidence warrants, to file the appropriate charges against persons found responsible therefor.”
The undersecretary also directed the NBI “to submit periodic reports on the progress of the subject investigation and case build-up to the Office of the Secretary within thirty days, and periodically thereafter.
Perez had earlier been identified by President Rodrigo Duterte as being involved in the narcotics trade but has denied it.
The mayor was killed Thursday night (Dec. 3) by unidentified gunmen inside the compound of the municipal hall while walking back to his office.
