The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is looking into the sale of fake COVID-19 test certificates by some recruitment agencies for Filipino workers bound abroad.
The NBI’s investigation was prompted by reports that some overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) were caught at the airport showing fake COVID-19 test results.
Travel authorities are requiring outbound travelers to present negative COVID-19 test results before boarding the plane as a precautionary measure.
“We have a witness who admitted that she was given a swab test result by her agency, even without going through an examination,” an NBI agent involved in the investigation told Politiko.
The NBI agent said traveler received the forged COVID-19 results through Facebook messenger, which she then showed to airport authorities.
“This is alarming, because the witness could be a carrier and she could infect the whole plane,’’ Politiko’s source said.
The NBI hopes the results of its investigation will prompt authorities to impose stricter measures to ensure travelers who leave the country are negative for COVID-19.
Politiko’s source said COVID-19 test results presented by airline passengers should be verifiable.
“There’s should be a way to quickly verify the authenticity of the document, ‘’ the NBI agent said.
