Never say die: Opposition lawmakers ask SC to stop martial law extension
Members of “Magnificent 7” of the House of Representatives led by Albay Representative Edcel Lagman has asked the Supreme Court (SC) to stop the one-year extension of martial law in Mindanao.
The lawmakers have filed a petition asking the SC declare as unconstitutional House Resolution No. 16 dated Dec. 12, 2018 which granted the request of President Rodrigo Duterte to have martial law extended until Dec. 31, 2019.
In their petition, the lawmakers pointed out martial law can no longer be extended because its purpose of crushing the Marawi siege and annihilating the Maute and Abu Sayyaf terrorist leadership had already been accomplished.
The petitioners reminded Duterte announced last October 17, 2017 that Marawi has been liberated following the killing of Isnilon Hapilon, Abu Sayyaf principal leader, and the Maute brothers, Abdullah and Omarkhayam.
“A series of long extensions makes the duration of martial law in virtual perpetuity,” the lawmakers said.
