Buhay Party-list Rep. Lito Atienza has slammed House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano for his alleged inaction over the pending franchise renewal bill of embattled media conglomerate ABS-CBN.

In an interview with CNN Philippines’ Pinky Webb, Atienza maybe its about time Congress “should have a new Speaker” if Cayetano’s leadership continues to sit on over the 11 pending legislations that seek to grant the a fresh 25-year franchise for the Lopez-owned firm.

Atienza said that the House leadership’s consistent inaction over the dormant franchise bills of ABS-CBN is “destroying the institution of the Lower House now especially on the eve of our restoring it to full existence” as country commemorates the 34th anniversary of the People Power Revolution.

Atienza, father of Kapamilya television host and weatherman Kim Atienza stressed he does not believe with Cayetano’s alibi that the House of Representatives is so busy tackling other urgent measures and has no time for now to hear the pending legislations in connection with the ABS-CBN franchise.

The former Manila mayor isn’t a fan of Cayetano and even supported the Taguig-Pateros solon’s main rival for the Speakership, Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco

In fact, Atienza decided to abstained during the election of new House Speaker during the opening of the 18th Congress in July 2019, after President Rodrigo Duterte forged the term sharing deal between Cayetano and Velasco.

Amid pressures from various sectors, Cayetano last Thursday admitted that his leadership is not in a hurry over the franchise renewal of ABS-CBN even though its current legislative franchise is set to expire next month.
