Retirement clearly isn’t in the vocabulary of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo at 73.
Arroyo, currently the Presidential Adviser on Clark Flagship Programs, is reportedly eyeing a return to Congress in 2022.
Politiko’s source said Arroyo plans to run again as congresswoman of Pampanga’s 2nd district while her son, incumbent Pampanga Rep. Juan Miguel “Mikey” Arroyo, will try his luck in the party-list race.
Since a landslide win could be expected for Arroyo, her sights are set on becoming Speaker once more. To accomplish this, she would have to be the choice of whoever wins the 2022 presidential race.
Arroyo’s supposed ambition to become Speaker for the second time is said to be the reason why she’s backing the rumored candidacy of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte for president.
There’s no doubt that Duterte and Arroyo are on good terms, with the presidential daughter maneuvering to install the former President as Speaker after being fed up with the antics of Davao Del Norte Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez in 2018.
An endorsement from Arroyo will no doubt boost Duterte’s candidacy in case she decides to run for president. The former President, after all, is seen as an influential figure in her party, Lakas-CMD.
Interestingly, Lakas-CMD’s membership in the House of Representatives has been steadily growing under the Duterte administration, with 45 members as of November 2020.
