NUP confident Cayetano will follow term-sharing with Velasco for Speaker

The National Unity Party (NUP) is confident that House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano will heed to the term-sharing deal for Speakership earlier brokered by President Rodrigo Duterte.
Barzaga said the term-sharing deal was the preferred choice of the President in finally resolving the heavily-contested speakership row which was marred with various dirty tactics and mudslinging, adding he doesn’t see any reason why Cayetano and Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco will oppose it.
“I don’t see any reason why anyone of the congressmen would remise to their promise over the decision of the President,” said Barzaga.
Duterte earlier brokered for a “1521” formula in which Cayetano will serve as Speaker for the first 15 months of the 18th Congress while Velasco will take over for the remaining 21 months.
Barzaga said he expects Cayetano to peacefully transfer his power to Velasco under prescribed timetable recommended by the chief executive.
“Look, I would expect that after 15 months as provided for by the agreement, Lord Allan Velasco will be the speaker for the remaining 21 months in Congress,” said Barzaga.
Barzaga admitted that many things can still happen in the next 15 months but as far as the NUP is concerned, they have “to honor proposal of the President.”
Citing his experience as a lawmaker during the Arroyo and Aquino presidencies, Barzaga admitted that the House speakership always needed the blessing of Malacañang.
