NUP’s Castro eyeing minority leadership in Lower House

Former House Majority Floor Leader and reelected Capiz Rep. Fredenil Castro will not join the Alan Peter Cayetano-led “Super Majority” in the opening of 18th Congress later this month.
Castro said instead of joining the so-called “Diehard Duterte Super Majority” or DDSM being pushed by the Taguig-Pateros solon, he will run for the next Minority Floor Leader of the House of Representatives during the opening of session on July 22.
Castro, president of the National Unity Party (NUP), stressed that there are members of the House “who have suggested” that he seek the Minority Leadership “to maintain a credible balance of opinion on all issues that the House of Representatives maybe called upon to resolve.”
He said he was “seriously studying” whether he could maintain his balance “considering the hairline difference between being a minority member from an opposition.”
“This is because, critical collaboration as distinguished from from being destructive is called for,” said Castro.
Politiko learned that other solons close to the previous Arroyo Speakership are set to join Castro in the new House Minority under the House leadership which will be shared by Cayetano and Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco in the remaining three years of the Duterte Administration.
“I will wait for guidance if I am capable of responding to this Macedonian call as part of my service to my country,” said Castro.
Castro served as Majority Floor Leader and chairman of Committee of Rules during the latter part of the speakership of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo earlier this year.
