How does Mrs. Imelda Aquino sound?
Philippine history would’ve taken a different turn if the former beauty queen Imelda Romualdez married the late senator Benigno Aquino Jr. instead of former President Ferdinand Marcos.
Veteran journalist Ricardo Malay said no less than Marcos revealed to him that she was courted by Aquino in her younger years.
In an opinion piece published in the Philippine Daily Inquirer Saturday (September 1), Malay said Marcos mentioned her love life when they had lunch on December 28, 2011.
Malay said he told Marcos that her husband, his father and Aquino were “brothers” at the Upsilon fraternity based at the University of the Philippines.
The mention of Aquino prompted Marcos to remark: “Alam mo yan si Ninoy, niligawan ako nyan.”
Asked why he didn’t fall for Aquino’s charms, Marcos said: “E masyadong madaldal, di ko type!”
The incumbent Ilocos Norte congresswoman ended up marrying the late President Marcos on May 1, 1954.
Aquino, meanwhile, married the former Corazon Cojuangco on October 11 of the same year.
