Pabigat yan! Angara bucks proposal for a P6 excise tax on diesel
Malacañang may have a hard time in pushing in the Senate the move introducing additional taxes on fuel products on top of the 12-percent value added tax (VAT) as no less than the chair of its ways and means committee, Senator Sonny Angara, finds it excessive.
In a television interview Monday (Jan. 23), Angara said he finds the Department of Finance’s proposal to slap a six-peso excise tax on diesel as “quite aggressive.”
“If I have to tell them something, I’d tell them what I told them in private that maybe, we have to temper some of the expectations and be less aggressive and be more concerned for the welfare of the disadvantaged sectors,” he said.
Angara noted that diesel is a widely used commodity especially in the transport sector and any imposition of additional taxes will affect prices of on other consumer goods, pointing that such proposal is seen to increase food prices between five percent to six percent.
“So kailangan mo pang isipin, kailangang pag isipan ng gobyerno kung sino talaga ang matatamaan dito at kung sino ang kailangan natin bigyan ng sabsidiya. So I’d like to hear more about that before we pass judgement on this. But yun nga medyo aggressive ang tax package,” he said.
DOF is looking at generating an additional P178 billion revenue on the first year of implementation on the excise tax increase on gas, diesel and other oil products.
