Palace: ABS-CBN can reapply for new franchise if Calida petition succeeds

ABS-CBN could “reapply” for a new franchise if Solicitor General Calida succeeded in his petition for quo warranto against the broadcast network, Malacañang said.
“The filing of the petition is much ado about nothing. Because if the quo warranto petition succeeds, then all ABS-CBN can do is reapply for a new franchise,” Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo told ANC’s Early Edition Thursday.
“If the franchise is revoked by reason of the petition of quo warranto, then ABS-CBN can again apply for a new franchise. Congress will have to resolve it,” he added.
Panelo maintained that President Rodrigo Duterte, who has repeatedly criticized ABS-CBN for allegedly not airing an advertisement during the 2016 presidential elections, had nothing to do with the legal action taken by Calida.
“It’s an independent move on the Solicitor General. The President doesn’t interfere with any departments unless there’s a complaint of corruption,” the Palace official said.
The franchise of ABS-CBN is set to expire on March 30.
