Palace acknowledges PH’s poor irrigation systems: We just rely on ulan which is not enough

Malacañang calls for improved irrigation water delivery to boost the country’s rice production sector.
Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo made the statement following a United States Department of Agriculture – Foreign Agricultural Services report that the Philippines has surpassed China in terms of rice imports this year.
“Ever since ‘yan ang naging problema. Marami tayong rice land pero hindi pumapasok ‘yung mga tubig. Kaya we had to—we have to improve more on our irrigation system para maganda ang production,” Panelo told reporters.
“If your land is not fertile to produce, how can you expect production? Eh, water ang pinaka-basic na kailangang ingredient hindi dumarating doon sa land, eh papaano? We just rely on ulan which is not enough,” he added.
To resolve the issue, Panelo pointed to Agriculture Secretary William Dar.
“Since Secretary Dar is on top of that, we’ll have to defer to whatever he says on the matter. (He) has been placed there precisely to undertake measures to solve whatever problems that confront the industry,” according to him.
