Malacañang on Sunday extended its condolences to the family of Elizabeth Yu Gokongwei, wife of the late founder and chairman emeritus of JG Summit Holdings, John Gokongwei Jr.
Elizabeth, 85, passed away Saturday, a day after her husband’s burial.
“We express our deep condolences to – and relay our commiseration with – the family, particularly her children, Robina, Lance, Lisa, Faith, Hope and Marcia, friends, colleagues, employees, and loved ones, Mrs. Elizabeth left behind,” said Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo.
In a statement, Panelo remembered life advice of the Gokongwei patriarch to “marry a good person for a spouse as she would be an ally in happiness and not a source of misery.”
His wife of 61 years, Elizabeth – the founding member of the Robinsons Department Store and head of its Merchandising Department from 1980 to 1992 – certainly fitted the bill, he added.
“(She) was the other half who helped in realizing the vision and dream of one of the greatest business leaders of our time. She fully supported the conviction of the businessman who dared,” according to him.
Panelo said the Palace would pray for Elizabeth and that she would be “dearly missed.”
Elizabeth went to St. Stephen’s High School and graduated from Case Western Reserve University in Ohio with a degree in Medical Technology.
