Malacañang does not view Davao City’s request for exemption from Martial Law as special treatment.

“Hindi naman siguro. Meron silang mga reasons for so doing. It was even recommended by the regional (Philippine National Police) there,” said Presidential Spokesperson and Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo said Tuesday.

Panelo added that it is up to President Rodrigo Duterte to decide on the matter.

“Wala pang ano. I do not know the position of the President yet. I intend in fact to ask him when I see him this afternoon… Tignan natin kung anong magiging position ni Presidente,” according to him.

In a letter to the Office of the President last August 7, Mayor Sara Duterte requested that martial law be lifted in Davao City.

President Rodrigo Duterte placed Mindanao under martial law in 2017 after Marawi City was besieged by militants affiliated to Islamic State. It will lapse on December 31, 2019.
