Palace on Huawei US ban: Duterte awaiting DND, NSA advice
By Prince Golez
President Rodrigo Duterte is waiting for the recommendation of the Department of National Defense (DND) and the National Security Adviser (NSA) on the United States’ (US) blockade of Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei amid concerns over security.
“I suppose the Department of National Defense as well as the National Security Adviser are studying that matter. And the President will be waiting for whatever recommendation they have on that,” said Duterte’s spokesman Salvador Panelo on Tuesday.
Asked if he would advise Huawei mobile users in the Philippines to switch brand, Panelo added: “I have no personal knowledge, or privy to anything about Huawei, so I cannot competently respond to that question.”
Google, an American multinational technology company, earlier said it would heed President Donald Trump’s order to ban Huawei phones from accessing Google services such as Gmail, Chrome, and YouTube.
The United States has said Huawei is a security risk, citing its close ties with the Chinese government.
