Malacañang on Monday came to the defense of Education Secretary Leonor Briones after the Commission on Audit (COA) urged the Department of Education (DepEd) to correct the errors in the P254.4-million worth of instructional materials for Grade 3 pupils.
“As far as I know the Secretary of Education is a very competent, intelligent educator and she’s someone who will never allow any irregularity or anomaly inside her department,” said Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo on Monday.
In its 2018 report, COA said the error-filled textbooks included description of Aurora and Zambales as coastal provinces, reference to Batangas port as an international gateway, and the phrases “Tubig sa loob ng thermometer” and “Ang retina ay parang kurtina na tumatakip sa mata.”
“In effect, the errors/deficiencies found in subject learning materials that are provided to the learners and educators in public elementary schools rendered these instructional materials of poor quality,” the state auditors said.
COA also recommended that DepEd improve and strengthen its process of review, scrutiny, and evaluation of instructional materials before publication and distribution to end-users.
