“Nonsense.”

This was what Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo had to say, after United States (US) Senator Marco Rubio called for the Philippine government to release detained Senator Leila de Lima.

“We don’t respond to nonsense,” Panelo said Sunday.

In a Twitter post yesterday, Rubio demanded de Lima’s immediate release from detention.

“Philippine Senator Leila de Lima, a critic of extrajudicial killings under Duterte’s so-called ‘war on drugs’, has spent the last two years in prison on bogus charges. I call on the Philippine government to unconditionally release her #FreeLeilaNow #ExpressionNOTOppression,” he wrote.

In April, Rubio, with five other American senators, called for de Lima’s release and the dropping of charges against Rappler founder Maria Ressa.

The former justice secretary is currently detained at the Philippine National Police Custodial Center on drug charges.
