Palace on VP Leni joining anti-drug ops: She may see the hostile and mortal realities on the ground

Malacañang welcomed the willingness of Vice President Leni Robredo to accept Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) chief Aaron Aquino’s challenge for her to join actual operations against illegal drugs.
Robredo convened the Inter-Agency Committee of Illegal Anti-Drugs Committee at her office in Quezon City last Friday, a few days after she accepted the role to become the government’s anti-drug czar.
“We are pleased to note that VP Leni is open to our suggestion that she oversee – and without putting her life in peril, personally join – any operation by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency or the policy against drug lords and pushers, that she may see the hostile and mortal realities on the ground,” said Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo in a statement.
This, Panelo added, “could pave the way for the reassessment of her previous adversarial position on the government’s relentless drive against prohibited drugs or her adoption of better and effective measures not heretofore done.”
Robredo has long been a vocal critic of Oplan Tokhang or the fight against illegal drugs, which has resulted in the killing of more than 6,000 people since the President Rodrigo Duterte took office in 2016 according to the national police.
