Palace turns blind eye to China harassment of fishermen to get big loans – Colmenares
Senatorial candidate Neri Colmenares has assailed the Duterte government for ignoring the plight of fishermen harassed by Chinese coast guards.
Colmenares recently released a short documentary about Masinloc fishermen complaining about the Chinese coast guard personnel who drive them away from Panatag Shoal thereby affecting their livelihood.
Reacting to the video, Presidential Spokeman Salvador Panelo challenged Colmenares to show proof before the government files a protest against China’s alleged harassment of fishermen.
“You know China’s harassment of our fishermen continues until now. You are just turning a blind eye because of China’s loans that we the Filipino people will pay long after you and Duterte have left Malacañang,” Colmenares tweeted.
He also slammed the government for using land and natural resources as collateral in a loan agreement with China, saying this was “unconstitutional and immoral.”
“We will be tying the future of the next generations to the whims and caprices of a foreign superpower. We should and must oppose this onerous contract,” he said referring to the Chico River pump irrigation project.
