Senator Francis Pangilinan has slammed President Rodrigo Duterte’s appointment of former Manila port district collectoe Vener Baquiran as a deputy commissioner of the Bureau of Customs (BOC).

Taking a jab at the administration’s anti-corruption and illegal drugs campaign, Pangilinan called Baquiran’s appointment “palusot” in a series of tweets posted Sunday (May 26).

“Tinanggal sa Ports Authority dahil sa pinalusot na bilyong piso na toneladang shabu tapos na promote bilang Deputy Commissioner sa Customs……palusot pa more,” he said.

Pangilinan, the Liberal Party’s president, said it was “foolish” that government officials linked to the illegal drug trade are promoted while small time drug pushers are killed.

Kalokohan,” he said.

Baquiran was fired by then- Customs commissioner Isidro Lapeña in August last year following the seizure of a multibillion-peso shabu shipment at the Manila International Container Port, which was concealed inside magnetic lifters.

Pangilinan said the government’s campaign against corruption and illegal drugs will always come under a cloud of suspicion unless the administration goes after the Customs officials involved in irregularities.
