Panakot lang ‘yan! Lacson calls martial law in Mindanao ‘toothless’
Senator Panfilo Lacson doesn’t understand the uproar over the declaration and extension of martial law in Mindanao because it is nowhere near the authoritarian rule imposed by the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.
Lacson, chair of the Senate national defense and security committee, said the martial law declared by President Rodrigo Duterte is “toothless” because constitutional rights are still guaranteed.
“Hindi ito ‘yung ML noong panahon ni ex-President Marcos na wala talagang rights na pwedeng ma-exercise kasi una, suspended ang Constitution. But this ML we are having now in Mindanao is actually a toothless ML,” he said.
Lacson said no less than administration officials have admitted that “psy war” was one of the objectives in the declaration of martial law in Mindanao.
Duterte declared martial law in Mindanao in May 2017 because of the Marawi siege. He has since asked Congress to extend it three times.
Mindanao will be under martial law until the end of December this year unless Duterte asks for another extension and Congress approves it.
