Duterte’s word ain’t enough: Palace says law needed for PH to be called Maharlika

Congress may enact a law to rename the Philippines to “Maharlika,” a Palace official said on Tuesday.
Spokesperson Salvador Panelo made the statement a day after President Duterte said he was open to changing the name of the country to “Maharlika.”
“The Constitution provides that Congress may enact a law that can change the name of the country and then submits it to the people for a referendum,” said Panelo in an interview with reporters.
Duterte’s chief legal counsel added that there is no more need for Charter change to change the country’s name.
“Meron munang law and then isa-submit sa referendum kung payag. Parang plebiscite din,” Panelo reiterated.
