Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo on Monday said he is “not very interested” in watching a Gilas Pilipinas game in the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China this August.

Asked if he plans to watch the upcoming FIBA tournament, Panelo told reporters: “I am not very interested in basketball. Panahon lang ni Michael Jordan ang gusto ko. Mga super galing. Pero magaling ang mga Pilipino sa basketball.”

President Rodrigo Duterte earlier confirmed he and Chinese Vice President Wang Qishan would watch the Gilas Pilipinas compete against Italy.

“The vice president of China himself will accompany me in the basketball game. It’s a break in protocol. Why would I quarrel with them? Will the vice president of America escort me if I go there?” according to him.

In his speech during the oath-taking of Filipino-Chinese businessmen in Malacañang, Duterte said he believes the Philippine team has no fight against the much taller Italians.

He also joked he would bet on China instead.
