FILIPINOS who are “desperate” for change in the country will side with Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte in the 2016 presidential race.
This can be deduced from Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III’s analysis of the reluctant presidential candidate’s popularity, as reflected in the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey.
Duterte is tied in third place with Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Mar Roxas in the pollster’s voter preference survey for “presdientiables”, tallying 15 percent. Duterte and Roxas are behind survey frontrunners Vice President Jejomar Binay and Senator Grace Poe.
According to Pimentel, the mayor’s good initial showing in the survey reflects some sort of desperation among the poll respondents with the “seeming chaotic or disordered situation” in the country, as well as the surge in criminality.
The lawmaker said it might also have to do with the brash and tough-talking Duterte’s reputation as the man responsible for bringing peace and order to Davao City.
Pimentel sits as head of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), which has expressed a willingness to back Duterte should he decide to vie for the seat in Malacañang next year.
Not all is squeaky clean about Duterte though: he has been tagged as “berdugo” or executioner because of his alleged links to extra-judicial killings in the province. (Randy K. Ortega)
