Panira si Imelda: Duterte blames ex-First Lady for destroying Marcos legacy
President Rodrigo Duterte believes the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos is “the most brilliant President” the Philippines has ever had despite the countless allegations of corruption and abuse that took place under his watch.
However, Duterte is convinced Marcos’ legacy would’ve been untainted had it not been for his wife, former First Lady and now incumbent Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Marcos.
Philippine Star editor Marichu Villanueva, in an article published on Saturday (August 6), quoted Duterte as saying during their paper’s courtesy call in Malacañang last August 3: Ang ganda ng patakbo niya (Marcos) even in Mindanao, nasira lang ng asawa.”
Duterte cited as basis for Marcos’ stellar leadership the “trailblazing” initiatives he launched, such as the Masagana 99 rice production program.
Marcos was ousted during the 1986 People Power revolution after serving as President for over two decades.
The former President’s son and namesake, former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., said Duterte has approved the plan to bury the late strongman at the Libingan ng mga Bayani on Sept. 18.
