Liberal Party President and Senator Kiko Pangilinan said the former ruling party is trying to sway actress Agot Isidro to join the opposition coalition for the 2019 elections.

Isidro has been vocal online about her opposition to the Duterte administration and a staunch supporter of the Aquino administration, which has made her a target of rabid supporters of the incumbent President.

With her in the so-called “Resistance” coalition are Senator Bam Aquino, former Quezon Rep. Erin Tañada, Free Legal Assistance Group chair Chel Diokno, Magdalo party-list Rep. Gary Alejano, and former Akbayan party-list Rep. Barry Gutierrez.

Aquino is the sole re-electionist senator in the minority bloc, the six others are with the majority, and is expected to join ruling party PDP-Laban’s slate.

Tañada is Liberal Party’s vice president for external affairs, while Diokno is also the founding dean of the De La Salle University College of Law.

They are sons of former Senator Wigberto Tañada and the late Senator Jose Diokno, both of whom were prominent politikos who fought against martial law during the term of former President Ferdinand Marcos.

Alejano had long been rumored to run for senator, but has not officially declared his intent to vye for a post in the upper chamber.

However, in a chance interview at Gregorio Lim Marine Base in Ternate, Cavite, Alejano said he is already preparing for a possible Senate run.

Gutierrez, meanwhile, is also the legal adviser of Vice President Leni Robredo.

Asked if sacked Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno would be included in the lineup, Pangilinan said, “We have to have strong women in our ticket.”

Sereno was ousted on May 11 by her peers in an 8-6 vote, after they granted the quo warranto petition filed by Solicitor General Jose Calida nullifying her appointment.

Her spokesperson, abogado Jojo Lacanilao, said Sereno has been offered to run for senator, but also said she has not decided yet whether she will accept this.

However, in a speech before supporters shortly after the quo warranto ruling, Sereno called for the formation of a movement to hold government accountable.

She also recently called for the resignation of President Rodrigo Duterte, who she says had a hand in her removal.

“Hindi matatawaran ang galing at paglingkod sa bayan ng nasa listahan ng mga tatakbo sa ilalim ng bandera ng tunay na oposisyon. Dati nang tumaya para sa bayan ang anim na ito, at sa kanilang pagtakbo ay muling pagtaya para sa buhay at kabuhayan nating mga Pilipino,” Pangilinan said in a statement.

He said the coalition would be resisting against China’s “encroachment” in Philippine waters, extrajudicial killings, corruption and the lack of jobs and the rising prices of goods.

“Haharapin ng anim at ng koalisyon ang mga government policy and action na hindi nakakabuti sa bayan at taumbayan,” Pangilinan said.
