Para ‘di na dalhin sa ospital: Angara wants barangays to have birthing facilities
By Marie P. Ruiz
Reelectionist Senator Sonny Angara today said there should be birthing facilities in all barangays of the country to reduce the risk of maternal and infant deaths.
Angara noted government statistics which showed that in 2017, the infant mortality rate in the Philippines was at about 22.2 deaths per 1,000 live births.
He said “There should be a safe and sustainable birth center in every barangay to give mothers and their children access to health care providers without breaking the bank.”
Angara has filed Senate Bill 2097 or the proposed Magna Carta for Barangays which aims to help barangays perform their mandate of delivering basic services by providing facilities, including health centers.
Angara is also one of the authors of the first 1,000 days law, or “Kalusugan at Nutrition ng Mag-Nanay Act,” wherein mothers and their children are now assured of better health care services during the early days of child development.
