Para magkaalaman na! Senate to challenge VFA before SC
The Senate could challenge the validity of President Rodrigo Duterte’s decision to terminate the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) with the United States without seeking senators’ approval, Senate President Vicente Sotto III said.
Sotto said Tuesday (February 11) that he wouldn’t be surprised if one of his colleagues raise the issue of terminating the VFA before the Supreme Court because several senators believe the Senate should’ve been consulted about it.
“Why not? So, we will be able, once and for all, (to) find out whether the provisions that we include in the new resolution we passed is correct,” he added, referring to the Senate’s imposition of a rule requiring its approval for treaties before they are ratified or terminated.
President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the VFA’s termination after the US cancelled the visa of his ally, Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa
The Philippines has sent notice of the VFA’s termination to the US, with Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro “Teddyboy” Locsin Jr. signing the document on President Rodrigo Duterte’s order.
