The island of Palawan will be divided into three provinces after President Rodrigo Duterte signed a new law creating Palawan del Norte, Palawan Oriental, and Palawan del Sur.

Duterte signed Republic Act 11259 on April 5 but copies of the law were only released on Saturday (April 13).

Under the new law, Palawan del Norte will be composed of the municipalities of Coron, Culion, Busuanga, Linacapan, Taytay and El Nido.

The municipalities of Roxas, Araceli, Dumaran, Cuyo, Agutaya, Magsaysay, Cayancillo, and San Vicente will comprise the province of Palawan Oriental.

Meanwhile, the province of Palawan del Sur will be composed of the municipalities of Aborlan, Narra, Quezon, Rizal, Espanola, Brooke’s Point, Bataraza, Balacbac and Kalayaan.

The capitals of Palawan del Norte, Palawan Oriental and Palawan del Sur will be the municipalities of Taytay, Roxas and Brooke’s Point, respectively.

Despite the signing of RA 11259, the new provinces will only be created upon approval by the majority of votes cast by residents in a plebiscite to be conducted in May next year.

Voting for the first set of elected officials for Palawan del Norte, Palawan Oriental and Palawan del Sur will be held at the same time as the May 2022 national elections.
