Partner in crime: Robredo tags China as PH’s top source of illegal drugs
Bulk of the illegal drugs that enter the country come from China, Vice President Leni Robredo said Thursday (November 14).
Robredo, co-chairperson of the Inter-Agency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs (ICAD), said she will look deeper into China’s involvement in importing illegal drugs to the Philippines following her meeting with officials of the Department of Interior and Local Government and the Philippine National Police.
“Gusto kong kumalap ng mas maraming datos, pero iyong pinaka-report sa atin ngayon, karamihan ng mga pumapasok na supply ng [ilegal na droga] dito, galing China,” she said, adding that many drug traders caught by local law enforcers are also Chinese.
Asked if she has plans to meet with Chinese officials, Robredo said she will study which countries the Philippines can work with in the fight against illegal drugs.
“Pag-aaralan muna natin kung anong mga bansa iyong pinaka-urgent na information nila ang kailangan natin. It can be any of the countries na hindi lang na mayroon tayong partnerships, pero who have also been helping us in the past as far as the campaign against illegal drugs is concerned,” she said.
Robredo said she is currently working with other ICAD officials to determine the baseline data regarding the country’s illegal drugs problem.
